Impact.
The Illawarra Bicycle Users Group (IBUG) has grown into a stronger, more influential community organisation over the past two years, combining effective advocacy with practical programs. It has helped keep cycling and active transport on the agenda through engagement with councils and government, pushing for safer, more connected infrastructure and positioning cycling as a response to cost-of-living pressures.
At the same time, initiatives like the Bicycle Buddies mentoring program, inclusive events, and partnerships have supported more people, especially women and new riders, to build confidence and ride.
Alongside this, IBUG has strengthened its grassroots impact through member growth and tools like identifying infrastructure “missing links,” contributing to a more connected, inclusive, and bike-friendly Illawarra.

In recent years, the IBUG member membership has increased from approximately 20 to over 100 people. We have a proactive leadership team who have developed our Strategic Plan 2024-26 that begins with this vision statement:
“Wollongong and Shellharbour Local Government Areas (LGAs) are places where everyone is able to safely ride a bike on roads, shared paths and separated paths for transport, recreation, wellbeing and social connection.”
To make this vision a reality our plan has three goals: Represent & Advocate, Increase Cycling, Improve Infrastructure.
