Women’s Cycling
Safe. Supported. Inclusive.
Supporting Cycling for Everyone
At the Illawarra Bicycle Users Group (IBUG), we believe cycling should be for everyone - especially women and non-binary people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
We know people ride when it feels safe, enjoyable, and supported. That’s why we advocate for:
30km/h speed limits on local neighbourhood streets
A connected, convenient cycling network with safe, direct routes
Healthier school travel, aiming for 75% of children to walk, ride, scoot or use public transport
More pedestrian and cycling crossings for safer movement
Thriving local businesses through beautiful, people-friendly streetscapes.
We proudly support the Better Streets campaign.
Better Streets Campaign.
Every Australian community deserves streets that are welcoming to people of all ages and abilities, better for the environment, and support local businesses to thrive.
We’re growing our social rides to support women and non-binary people getting back into cycling. Whether you’re rebuilding confidence or just starting out, you’re welcome here.
In recent years, we’ve hosted events like the Fancy Women’s Bike Ride and screenings of Women Don’t Cycle. We understand that every rider is different, so we’ve compiled a list of local groups below that offer regular rides and supportive cycling communities for women in the Illawarra.
IBUG Women’s Rides
Bicycle Buddies
A volunteer based supportive mentor program.
Bicycle Buddies is a friendly, suburb-based mentoring program connecting women and non-binary people who want to get back on their bikes with experienced IBUG volunteers for one-on-one support, encouragement, and guidance.
We offer flexible, tailored rides on quiet local routes for both leisure and active transport, with the goal of increasing confidence, safety, and enjoyment.
